Effective 2 October 2017, the Kenyan Department of Immigration Services is enforcing a requirement that original police clearance certificates (PCC) must be submitted in support of initial and renewal applications for all work permit and pass types.

This includes Class D work permits, Dependent Passes and Student Passes.

What exactly is required?

  • All applicants aged 18 years and above must obtain a police clearance certificate from their country of residence.
  • For renewal applications, if the applicant is currently in Kenya, they can obtain the PCC from Nairobi Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
  • If the PCC is not in English, any translated version will need to be legalized.

Action Items

  • Employers should ensure that these new documents are available early in their foreign employees’ immigration processes, to avoid delays in obtaining their work permits and passes.
